Questions
What is a good nonprofit overhead ratio?
Many watchdogs look for a program expense ratio of at least 65 percent, meaning no more than about 35 percent goes to admin and fundraising combined. Higher program ratios are generally viewed more favorably, though context matters.
What is the difference between overhead and program spending?
Program spending goes directly to your mission and services. Overhead is everything else: management and general administration plus fundraising costs. The two together make up your total expenses.
Is a low overhead ratio always better?
Not necessarily. Chronically starving overhead can weaken an organization. The ratio is one signal funders use, best read alongside outcomes and financial health, not on its own.
